Council Overview

Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council is among the oldest and largest girl organizations in the Carolinas. Today, the Council serves 17,000 girls and adults in eight counties in North and South Carolina. These include Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly, Union and York, SC.

Fast Facts

  • 1912 – Girl Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, GA. Juliette understood that providing girls the tools to become self-reliant would benefit them in the long run.
  • 1935 – Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council received its charter from Girl Scouts USA.
  • Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council is one of 112 councils under Girl Scouts USA.
  • Service Units – The Council serves 8 counties with 19 Service Units. A Service Unit provides a local network of support for Girl Scout volunteers and troops. With a variety of volunteers in leadership positions, each Service Unit works together to reach its own goals and improve the area it serves.


Grade Levels

Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council has Girl Scout troops for all grade levels. Is your daughter new to Girl Scouts? No problem! Girls Scouts is open to all girls grades K-12. Troops are assigned based on school grades:

  • Daisies (K – Grade 1)
  • Brownies (Grades 2 & 3)
  • Juniors (Grades 4 & 5)
  • Cadettes (Grades 6, 7 & 8)
  • Seniors (Grades 9 & 10)
  • Ambassadors (Grades 11 & 12)
