Join Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council during our annual community food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and its partner agencies.

It's easy to make a difference

Troops & Girl Scout Families
Troops and/or individual Girl Scout families are encouraged to participate in the food drive.

Participants are asked to select a neighborhood(s) to canvas. Between September 26 - October 3, Girl Scouts will leave door hangers on neighbors' doors instructing them on how to donate to the food drive.

On October 9, Girl Scouts will return to their chosen neighborhoods to collect donations left out by neighbors. They will then deliver donations to one of the designated locations listed below and receive their 2021 Food Drive patch.

Please review the accordion below for specific details on how your troop or family can participate.

Community Members
If you receive a Girl Scout door hanger on your door during the week of September 26, a Girl Scout will be in your neighborhood on Saturday, October 9 collecting donations. To participate:

  • Fill any paper or plastic bag(s) with non-perishable food items
  • Place your bag(s) on your front porch or next to your mailbox by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 9.

If you do not receive a Girl Scout door hanger on your door during the week of September 27, you can still donate! Simply bring your bag(s) of non-perishable food items to any of the drop off locations listed below.

How Can My Troop or Family Participate in the Food Drive?

Many Service Units are coordinating efforts for the food drive. Be on the lookout for communications from your Service Unit team on specific ways to participate.

If you are unsure if your Service Unit is participating, but your troop or family wants to get involved, reach out to Stephanie Flury at for details.

Request Food Drive Materials

GSHNC will provide Girl Scout Food Drive branded door hangers and yard signs to all participants. We recommend allocating at least 10-25 door hangers per Girl Scout. Yard signs are limited to one per neighborhood and should only be placed at primary neighborhood entrances by Thursday, October 7.

Yard signs and door hangers can be picked up from the GSHNC Service Center located at 7007 Idlewild Road, Charlotte, NC 28212 between September 13–24. Materials pick up is contactless and must be arranged 48 hrs in advance by submitting this form:

Second Harvest Food Bank Tours

Second Harvest Food Bank will be offering small group tours again this year to those Girl Scouts who choose to drop their donations off at their facility.

This is a great opportunity to bring the food drive experience full circle as girls can see their efforts in action and learn more about the hunger crisis in our area.

Tours last approximately 15 minutes and are limited to 10 participants (including adults). Registration is required. Visit for more info and to sign up!

Which Non-Perishable Food Items are Needed Most?

While all non-pershable food is welcome, Second Harvest of Metrolina has shared the following items are most needed:

  • Canned Fish or Meat
  • Peanut Butter
  • Canned Low Sodium Soups and Stews
  • Canned or Dried Beans
  • Canned Fruits in Juice
  • Canned Low Sodium Vegetables

Pro Tip: Avoid donating items in soft packaging (i.e. bags of chips, bags of pasta, etc.) Due to the volume of items donated, these items are often crushed by the weight of other donations and become unusable.

Do Girl Scouts Receive a Patch for Participating?

Yes, all participating Girl Scouts will receive a free 2021 Food Drive patch. Patches will be distributed to girls on October 9 at their designated drop off location.

I'm Unavailable on October 9. Can I Still Donate?

Yes! If you are unable to drop off your donation at a designated location on October 9, the Girl Scouts, Hornets' Nest Cookie Cabana will have drop-off bins available from October 11 - October 29 during office hours (M-F 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).

Additionally, we have a drop off location at Hunter Farm in Weddington, NC that will be accepting donations on Tuesday, October 19 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Girl Scouts can receive their patch from the onsite Hornets' Nest Shop when they drop off their donations.
