Membership Year 2025 Update
We are using a waitlist system for the free adult trainings; this will ensure we are able to serve volunteers from across our council with the trainings that have limited capacities in an equitable manner. There are 10 spots available for this training. Depending on the facilitator requirements for the specific activity, one or two volunteers per service unit will be assigned spots in the class. If there are any spots left over, we will draw names from those on the waitlist to fill out the roster 3 weeks before the training date.
Training Information
This training has both an online and an in-person component and participation in both is mandatory in order to receive credit for participating. Upon completion of this training and pending instructor approval, you will be qualified for two years to take Girl Scouts out on canoes and kayaks at GSHNC properties.
Participant Information
Online Portion
A week prior to the training date you will be assigned the required online portion of the training through gsLearn. After you receive the assignment email from gsLearn, you will be able to log into your myGS account, click on gsLearn, and view the Small Craft Safety Training listed on your homepage. This course contains approximately one hour of training videos and a knowledge check. You will not be permitted to participate in the in-person training and skills test if you do not complete and pass all modules in the online course.
In-Person Portion
The in-person session requires strenuous physical activity. You will be in and out of the cold water during all outdoor components. Some of the skills include: swimming with and without a PFD, tipping and righting water craft in the water, paddling and solo navigating in the water.
Supplies
A confirmation email with additional details, including a packing list, will be sent a few days before the training.
GSHNC reserves the right to cancel an event due to low enrollment or other circumstances which would make the event non-viable.
